Market trends

Last new developments on the forehead of the labor market: how the Italian companies are doing, if they are hiring / firing, the professional demand:

  • automotive field: the Engineer Alberto Ghiglieno is the new superintendent of FIAT Automóveis, at Betim (MG) and faces some challenges ahead. The field goes through hard moments. With the automotive market wholly stagnated, the sole way of getting the "break even" on the year 2004 is by cutting drastically the costs. We didn't hear about "cuts" on a Directory / Administrative level, neither new assumptions.

  • cables/tyres: Pirelli has announced recently a new investment of about 50 million reais (local currency) to widen the cable factory of Sorocaba (SP). Once the investments are directed to improving the procedures and introducing new technologies, it also looks like bringing in approximately 70 new chances in this field.

  • food market: Ferrero seems to be losing interest in the Brazilian market due to undefined problems with the conservation of the product.

  • advertising: In this period of budget cuts, the job market is obviously going down, but concerning the high "turn-over" in the agencies, above all in creative departments, there are always many opportunities.

  • other fields: the devaluation of the real has rendered the most attractive value of the "Brazilian assets" and a wiser and more profitable initial investment for foreign enterprises.
Signing a growing interest of small and medium Italian Companies in opening commercial branches in Brazil.

Hints to live better em São Paulo

São Paulo is a hard city, sometimes it isn't...

    • Opening an account- If you would have to spend some months in São Paulo, and need to manage money, you can open a foreigner account.
For further information, contact Banco Sudameris (Comit Group) phone 233-5635 (Valéria).

To better control your investments, we suggest two sites: http://www.investracker.com.br/ and http://www.infostock.com.br/, where you can create an historical series and analyze your investments.

    • On line Supermarket - In case you want to buy drinks or munches, but you don't feel like going out, contact Supermercado Sé, which also has real stores.

    • Renting a car - Remember that foreigners should have an International license to drive.
      Some rental agencies are :
      - Avis / tel. 0800-558066
      - Budget / tel. 0800-142499
      - Hertz / tel. 0800-147300

    • Change money - If you need to exchange money for Reais, forget about the banks, they don't offer favorable taxes.
You better look for a "casa de câmbio"; I suggest Action
(you can find one in the Shopping Paulista and in other places of São Paulo.

    • Living in São Paulo - If you need to stay for some months, the best you can do is rent a flat. There are excellent flats on several places in town, especially in Paulista and Itaim Neighborhood. A suggestion: don't rent it directly at the flat reception, but look for a Real State Agency, you can save up to R$1000,00 a month!
      Some Real State Agency:
      - Victorino's Imoveis - tel. 280-7500
      - Over - tel. 852.1044
      - Olivver - tel. 884-3595
      - Rarús - tel. 3882-7676
      - Carispar - tel. 536-9877

    • By táxi - Taxi drivers in São Paulo are most of the time honest. The radio-taxis are approximately 30% more expensive, but offer you extra security: if you want to be sure your wife/husband/Children are in good hands, trust them. They can be located at any time.

    • At a restaurant - In São Paulo you eat very well. Some time ago the annual edition of '"Veja– São Paulo" Magazine dedicated to Restaurants and Bars in town was published. Look for it.
Putting aside the great (and too expensive) Italian Restaurants (Fasano, Massimo, Bice, etc), there are some other sympathetic where you can eat well and in great quantity. One of them is Lellis
, on 1849, Bela Cintra Street (near Paulista Avenue). Try the home salad, it's worthwhile.
I recommend the restaurant Spot, on Av. Ministro Rocha Azevedo Avenue, 50 m far from Paulista Avenue: the place is cool, sympathetic, beautiful people, where you can eat discreetly upon an average cost.

    • Pizza! - If, one night, you don't feel like going out for dinner, order a pizza by phone. In no more than half an hour it will be there and very hot. For those who live in Paulista / Itaim, one of the best Delivery Pizzeria is Montherous's , (phone 289-8240). Excellent price/quality rate. Tastes are not discussible, but I suggest half "4 queijos" and half "Catupiry com bacon". "Mussarela com tomate seco" is wonderful as well. About R$ 15,00 is enough to get a pizza for two people.
Remarked for a visitor, the pizzeria "Oficina de pizzas"
, located in Vila Madalena, on 517, Rua Purpurina, architecture based on Gaudí, the pizza is good.
Suggestion: on these pizzerias, one pizza for 2 people will do.

    • Shopping - With the devaluation of the Real, buying some articles can be interesting. Except clothes (the quality is lower than the Italian one) and books (much more expensive), you can find out CD of Brazilian and International music for a reasonable price. The jewelry is not so expensive and quality is modest, except, of course, the big nets (H.Stern, Vivara, and Dryzun...). Along with the shopping malls ( Iguatemí, Ibirapuera and Morumbi, the most elegants), there are some well-known shopping streets, like Oscar Freire, Haddock Lobo, Lorena and Bela Cintra.

    • Free markets - I assign two classic small free markets in São Paulo, that take place on Sundays, one at MASP (antiquary), and the other on the other side of the same avenue.
If you have to buy a not too expensive gift that's where you can find nice and original things.

    • Hospitals - Some particular hospitals are very good, (and of course, very expensive, in case you don't have health security).
      -
Albert Einstein (Av. Albert Einstein, 627 - Morumbí), hebraic hospital, tel. 845-1233
      -
Sírio Libanes (Rua Da. Adma Jafet, 91 - Bela Vista/Centro), sírio-libanês hospital, tel. 234-8877
      -
Beneficência Portuguesa (Rua Maestro Cardim, 769 - Paraiso), portugues hospital, tel. 253-5022
      -
Incor (Av. Dr. Eneas Carvalho de Aguiar, 44 - Cerqueira Cesar), heart diseases, tel. 3069-5000
      -
Morumbí (Av. Giovanni Gronchi, 6195 - Morumbí), tel. 846-6600
      -
São Luis (Rua Dr. Alceu de Campos Rodrigues, 95 - Vila Nova Conceição), tel. 829-6611

      Having fun

São Paulo's nights are incredibly lively and amusing. There are lots of bars and dancing clubs, you'd better visit Guia de São Paulo and Afterdark de Zaz. If you had any doubt, contact me by email. Some hints:

      • Cultural events - Visit the site São Paulo - Eventos culturais of São Paulo City Hall, it's very interesting and complete. Worthy of being visited.

      • Escolas de samba - O Carnival is coming and "escolas de samba" are already rehearsing. Vai Vai is one of the most prestigious. Rehearsals every Sunday at 9:00 pm on Av. Nove de Julho, near Rua 13 de Maio - Bexiga)
        Tickets: R$ 2,00.

      • Shows at Ibirapuera Park - Every Sunday at 11:00 am, on "Praça da Paz", the city hall organizes a free presentation, most of them, (or almost most of them) are very nice.

Once we are in the Park, after the show you can listen to the northeastern "repentistas". You can find them near the lake and the Bandeira's Monument.

      • Musical shows-

        CREDICARD HALL (Av.das Nações Unidas, 17.995 - tel. 5643-2500):

TEATRO ALFA (Rua Bento Branco de Andrade, 722 - tel. 5693-4000):

      • Sala São Paulo (Praça Júlio Prestes - tel. 223-5199)
The old station Julio Prestes, recently restored, it's a real jewel. The concert hall has a mobile structure that allows adapting acoustics requests to the different kinds of music.
        Almost daily shows.

      • Dance - Pay attention not to go to places attended by teens, it could be a little embarrassing. Try to know previously the medium age, it's not difficult.
        We recommend
Charles & Edward, on Av. Juscelino Kubitscheck (in front of Dado Beer) - Itaim. A small place, many beautiful people, aged about 25 to 30 years

      • Bar and dancing clubs - Are the strongest points in São Paulo, mainly those in Vila Madalena and Itaim. Most of them feature live music, the better choice to meet nice people and to court.
        Signed for a visitor, the
Bourbon Street, Av. Chanés (Moema). Good music R&B, adult public (no teens).

      • Soccer - The most famous teams are: Palmeiras, traditional one linked with the Italian community, Corinthians and São Paulo. At this moment the Brazilian Championship is taking place, try to see a game, it pays off. If it wouldn't be a game between two big teams, it's not too dangerous.
The tickets cost from R$10 to R$30.

      • Museums - MASP (Paulista Avenue) must be visited. If you have enough time, go also to Pinacoteca and MAM.

      • Rua 15 de Novembro - this downtown street has many interesting buildings, concerning architectural designs. And you must visit BOVESPA, São Paulo Stock Exchange. Free entrance and no bureaucracy. Operations begin at 11:00 AM from Monday to Friday.
